Isu dan Polisi Semasa:
Currently more than 70% of the vegetables produced in Malaysia are grown by small farmers on derelict government land. Gradually, these groups of farmers are being evicted and the land they have been cultivating for decades is being sold to housing developers and for industrial sites. This not only affects the livelihood of small farmers but also food security for the people.
Nilai-nilai & Kepercayaan
"Food security is a very important issue given the ongoing climate change. Malaysia should strengthen the capacity of local farmers to produce food. Decisions related to land are centralized in the hands of the Chief Minister (MB) of each state. Often the need for funds for political activities influences the MB to dispose the agricultural land to developers and the long-term needs of the people are ignored."
Penyelesaian:
"1. Food security including the supply of local vegetables should be recognized as an important piece of information for the safety and well-being of the people. 2. The government should formulate a policy where vegetable growing areas are maintained as food producing areas for the people and gazetted for this land use. Farmers who cultivate this land should be given a long lease (20 years) so that they dare to invest in upgrading their cultivation activities. Farmers who are given a lease cannot sell this land to another party. If the farmer involved does not grow vegetables for more than two years, the government should take back the land and another lease should be given to another farmer who is interested in growing vegetables. 3. The land law was amended to create a committee at the level of each state to monitor the disposal of land in that state. The committee must have representatives from farmers in the state and must have the power to cancel the disposal of land to a third party if the land is being used to grow vegetables."
