2C-11 Women’s participation in political and public life

By: Rusni Tajari

Organisation/ Individual: Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO)

Policy Code: 2c Women

Problem Statement and Current Policy:

Malaysia has 14.4% of female representation in parliament and is lacking in other leadership and law making roles. The 30% (state where the benchmark is from) has not been achieved

Value(s) and Belief:

To institutionalise women participation in political and public life

Proposal of Solution and Call for Action:

1) Implement a zero-tolerance policy towards GBV and discrimination, including by amending the Parliamentary standing orders. 2) Implement and institutionalise 30% quota for women representation in state and federal-level decision making bodies

Additional information:

Women lawmakers are constantly harassed, ridiculed and shut down in public office. Oftentimes in a public setting, which is a violation of Malaysia’s commitment to CEDAW under Article 7.
