By: Badlishah Sham Baharin

Organisation/ Individual: GBM/IKRAM

Policy Code: 1B Religious Harmony

Problem Statement and Current Policy:

Oftentimes we have racial or religious tension issues which may turn into racial or religious violence/conflict if not handled early before it turns ugly. Examples include Low Yat incident, Seafield Temple (fireman Adib), non halal section of Jaya Grocer (Bukit Jelutong) and many more.

Value(s) and Belief:

Need to set up a mechanism comprising of trained mediators, counsellors, religious, community leaders able to resolve conflicts when it happens. This mechanism should be given enforcement powers of its decision, if possible.

Proposal of Solution and Call for Action:

At federal level may need to enact an Act such as Reconciliation Act to define the mediation commission and allow for enforcement of its decision At state level may be in the form of a mediation council sanctioned by the State Exco which can deal with any incidents of racial or religious tension to prevent it from escalating into something violent. Besides acting as a prevention mechanism, this council can also educate the public on virtues of living in peace and harmony between different races and religion. It can be a mechanism to promote national unity.
