Problem Statement and Current Policy:
The recent high publicity cases of sexual harassment at school and in the national swimming team are among the few that had been made known to us because these victims dared to speak up. In the process, the repercussions from a number of netizens in the form of victim blaming have been relentless. These recently reported cases could have been better resolved if only the sexual harassment bill which had been enacted since 2020 had been tabled in parliament.
Value(s) and Belief:
Need to educate the society regarding the danger of naturalisation of rape and sex jokes. There is also a need to set up an ecosystem that is safe and free from any discomfort related to sexual harassment in the public, work place and learning institutions.
Proposal of Solution and Call for Action:
1. The sexual harassment bill needs to be tabled immediately in parliament. 2. All public and private institutions set up special committee to create the safe environment against sexual harassment and handle reported cases in their institutions. 3. A public awareness campaign must be conducted at all levels.
