Policy Code: 1A Bangsa Malaysia
Problem Statement and Current Policy:
Unity and diversity approach was in practice since independence. No significant improvement but similar chaos from time to time like the recent riots in USJ and the Bukit BIntang racial fights for example. The unity in Malaysia is more make belief or on thin ice in reality. In your whole lifetime you can notice this when you see biasness and racism at least in discrete. Unity in diversity has failed for half a century and will continue to fail because the diversity part in relality separates one ethnicity from another. You can cleary see the partition even Singapore is slightly better. However most success goes to other South East Asian neighbours like Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia in terms of social intergration because they clearly emphasise regional origin in language and culture.
Value(s) and Belief:
Unity project alone is actually a better alternative even for the non indigenous group. When there is concrete affiliation and commonality there is harmony. However difference actually creates tension no matter how we sugar coat it. This is the reality.
Proposal of Solution and Call for Action:
One language one culture one common goal that embrace regional origin, at least at national and public level. Thats unity. Why do we have obvious racial tension in America and Israel ? Because there is no respect for regional origin but changing the landscape. Singapore may seem to work but not quite. There is actually racial tension in Singapore but the minorities are too frail and largely outnumbered to speak up. However in Malaysia due to the racial composition, unity in diversity will create a very long term problem perhaps for another half century. Though outright discriminaton is under control in Malaysia, the discrete biasness is very much alive. However we have to agree the racial harmony has showed several cracks from time to time.
